Let me be real with you for a second – I have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day.
On one hand, it’s cute and fun. On the other hand, it’s either ALL candy or cheap plastic junk that breaks in approximately 2.3 seconds and ends up in the trash by February 15th.
So this year, I’m doing things differently. I put together a Valentine’s Day basket for girls 4+ with stuff that won’t make you regret it a week later. These are things your kiddos will actually use, play with, and maybe – just maybe – not lose in the couch cushions within 24 hours.
What Should Go in a Valentine’s Day Basket for Girls 4+?
Here’s my rule: if it’s going to end up in the trash or the donation pile, it’s not going in the basket. Period.
I’m looking for things that have staying power – toys they’ll play with more than once, activities that keep them busy, and treats that aren’t straight sugar bombs. Basically, stuff you’d buy anyway, just with a Valentine’s Day twist.
Toys They’ll Actually Play With
Let’s start with the fun stuff. Here are some toy ideas for a Valentine’s Day basket that won’t collect dust:
Mini Plushies & Stuffed Animals
Those little heart-themed stuffed animals? Kids can’t get enough of them and carry them everywhere. Squishmellows, teddies – pick whatever character obsession they’re currently in.
Small Dolls or Figurines
If your kids are into dolls, mini versions are perfect for baskets. They’re portable, they don’t take up a ton of space, and they actually get played with. The Polly Pocket Sweetheart Playsets are a fan favorite and such a great option for this category.
Play Jewelry
Bracelets, necklaces, rings – all the sparkly stuff. My kids love play jewelry. I found the cutest lightup heart wand that’s perfect for dress up and pretend play.
Bubbles
Heart-shaped bubble wands, princess-themed bottles – whatever. Bubbles are always a win. Easy entertainment that gets them outside.
Play-Doh or Slime
Pink, red, purple – go wild. Play-Doh is messy but it keeps them busy for hours. My personal favorite is the Dohkins Dough. Comes with three cute characters and doesn’t dry out or crack. If you’re feeling brave, throw in some Valentine’s-themed slime.
Arts & Crafts That Keep Them Busy
This is where Valentine’s Day baskets shine. Arts and crafts are perfect for this age because they’re hands-on, fun, and you can reuse them over and over.
Valentine Stickers
Kids this age are OBSESSED with stickers. Get a pack and watch them decorate everything in sight. I recommend grabbing a reusable sticker book that they can use on repeat.
Coloring Books & Crayons
Heart-themed coloring books, princess designs, animals – whatever they’re into. Pair it with some fun glitter pens, new crayons, or washable markers.
DIY Craft Kits
There are tons of Valentine’s craft kits on Amazon – bracelet making, foam stickers, bead kits. These are great because they can do them multiple times, not just once.
Heart Stamps & Ink Pads
Stamping is oddly addictive for kids. They’ll stamp everything. Paper, their arms, the dog (kidding… kind of). This Melissa + Doug find is a great starter set.
Books for Quiet Time
Books are one of my favorite things to include in a Valentine’s Day basket because they last. You read them over and over, and they don’t end up in the trash.
Some cute Valentine’s Day book ideas:
If you’re not into Valentine’s-specific books, grab a fun activity book with mazes, dot-to-dot, or reusable stickers. Same vibe, more versatile.
Treats (That Aren’t Just Candy)
Okay, I’m not anti-candy. But I am anti-candy-coma. So here are some treat ideas for a Valentine’s Day basket that won’t send your kids bouncing off the walls:
Fruit Snacks or Yogurt Melts
Still sweet, but not straight-up sugar.
Heart-Shaped Chocolates (in Moderation)
A few chocolates? Fine. A bucket of candy? Hard pass.
Teddy Grahams or Pink-Frosted Cookies
Cute, themed, and not as intense as pure candy.
Lollipops
One lollipop lasts way longer than a pile of chocolates.
Cozy & Cute Extras
This is where you can get a little fancy without spending a ton.
Valentine Pajamas or Cozy Socks
PJs are always a hit. Heart-themed, pink, red – whatever. They’ll wear them all month.
Hair Bows, Headbands, or Clips
Little accessories they can wear to school or just around the house.
Heart-Shaped Sunglasses
Are these necessary? No. Will your kid wear them 24/7 for a week? Absolutely.
Little Purse or Backpack
A tiny purse they can carry their treasures in. They love this stuff.
Personalized Touches
Want to make the basket feel extra special? Add something personal.
A Card “From Mom & Dad”
Just a little note. They love this.
Name on a Cup, Bracelet, or Sticker
Personalized stuff is always a hit!
“Coupon” for a Special Activity
Movie night, baking together, park day – whatever. These are free, and they actually love them.
Photo of Your Family
Throw in a little photo or frame. Cheesy? Maybe. Do they love it? Yes.
Candy-Free & Sugar-Free Ideas
If you’re trying to avoid the sugar high entirely, here are some non-candy ideas for a Valentine’s Day basket:
Temporary tattoos
Kid-safe lip balm or nail polish
Toothbrush with a character on it
Bubble bath or bath bombs for kids
Small flashlight or glow sticks
How Much Should You Put in a Valentine’s Day Basket?
You don’t need to go overboard. For a 4-year-old, 5-8 items is plenty. Enough to feel exciting, but not so much that they’re overwhelmed, or you’re broke.
Mix it up – a toy or two, a craft activity, a book, a treat, and maybe something cozy. Done.
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect basket. You just need a few things your kid will actually enjoy – and that won’t drive you crazy a week later.
Stick to stuff that lasts, skip the junk, and don’t overthink it. Your kid is going to be thrilled no matter what.
